You can snag your very own picture with Presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton… if you happen to have $100,000 laying around.
The Biden Victory Fund is hosting an event in New York City on Thursday night to raise money for the president’s reelection campaign and some tickets for the star-studded shindig are ringing in at upwards of half a million dollars.
On Wednesday’s show, Megyn was joined by Batya Ungar-Sargon, author of the new book Second Class, to discuss the fundraiser and how it illustrates the Democratic Party’s shift away from working class voters.
The Fundraiser
On Thursday, Biden, Obama, and Clinton will be at Radio City Music Hall in New York City for a glitzy fundraiser. Mindy Kaling will reportedly emcee the gala, which also features performances by Cynthia Erivo, Queen Latifah, Lizzo, Lea Michele, and Ben Platt.
According to the Biden campaign, the rally “will be kicked off by First Lady Jill Biden” and “culminate with the main event of an armchair conversation with the three presidents, moderated by none other than Late Night’s Stephen Colbert.” An afterparty will apparently be hosted by the first lady and DJ D-Nice.
Entry-level tickets to the event, which claims to be sold-out, start at $225 for an “automatically assigned” seat in the rafters – ahem, the third mezzanine. Seats in the orchestra are priced from $500, and donors need to pony up a minimum of $10,000 to get into the afterparty.
For $100,000, guests will be treated to famed photographer Annie Leibowitz snapping their picture alongside Biden, Obama, and Clinton and “access to [the] VIP entrance.” An invite to the “host’s reception,” meanwhile, will set you back $250,000. And if you want your name in the program, you’ll need to fork over $500,000.
Democrat Elites
As Megyn explained, the price points are exclusionary. “They’re really going for the plumbers of America – that’s the class they’re really trying to appeal to here with their $225 tickets and their $100,000 photos,” she joked.
Kidding aside, Megyn noted it is reflective of a larger shift in the Democratic Party. “You have a president who, right now, is focused on student loan, quote, forgiveness, which is a wealth transfer… and we’re all going to be driving electric-powered cars by 2032,” she explained. “I mean, that’s a direct punishment of the working class.”
Just as they are “not going to pay $80,000 for a Tesla” because they can’t afford to, Megyn said this group that used to represent the Democrat base “can’t pay $225 for a ticket” to the fundraiser either. “They don’t get it,” she said. “It’s like all of the president’s policies seem geared toward ginning up support amongst those core elite groups – like the rich soccer moms, the elite college grads… and the people who are driving Teslas – and definitely not the working class.”
Ungar-Sargon’s new book takes a closer look at how the elites betrayed America’s working men and women beginning, in many ways, with President Clinton. “Prior to Bill Clinton, the Democrats used to be the party of the working class,” she explained. “And then Bill Clinton showed up and said, ‘Actually, let’s have a trade deal called NAFTA. Let’s send five million good middle class American jobs to China and Mexico, build up their middle class, and then import cheap products for our new base, who are the college-educated elites.'”
Those policies continued during the Obama administration. “Obama shows up and says, ‘Those jobs aren’t coming back. Maybe your father worked in a factory, but you’re not going to work in a factory,'” she noted. “And so they ship all the good paying jobs overseas.”
Flash forward to present day, and Ungar-Sargon said President Biden has doubled down. “Joe Biden shows up and says, ‘Actually, we’re going to open the border and bring in an entirely new slave class to compete with you here for the jobs that are still here,'” she explained. “So, it’s like this gallery of robes when you think about the process the Democratic Party went through to abandon the working class and instead cater to the college-credentialed elites who consume cheap products from China and consume the cheap labor of illegal immigrants.”
