Just when it seemed like the flood of calls for Joe Biden to step aside as the 2024 Democrat nominee was subsiding, he got a gut punch from Hollywood.
George Clooney penned an op-ed in The New York Times on Wednesday calling on the 81 year old to withdraw from the race because he is no longer up to the task. This is the same George Clooney who hosted a star-studded fundraiser for the president just weeks ago. That has led many to wonder: Where was his concern then?
On Wednesday’s show, Megyn was joined by Glenn Greenwald, host of Rumble’s System Update, to discuss Clooney’s explosive column and why it has taken so long for the left to tell the truth about Biden’s condition.
Clooney’s Column
Less than a month after co-hosting a glitzy fundraiser that brought in some $30 million for Biden’s re-election campaign, Clooney says the Democrats need to go in a new direction. The self-described “life-long Democrat” wrote a bombshell guest essay for the Times that ran Wednesday in which he explicitly called on Biden to step aside.
In the column titled “I Love Joe Biden. But We Need a New Nominee.“, the Oscar winner professed his “love” for Biden’s political career, “morals,” and “character” before dropping the hammer. “It’s devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fund-raiser was not the Joe ‘big F-ing deal’ Biden of 2010,” he wrote. “He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate.”
He then called out Democratic Party leaders — including Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries, and Nancy Pelosi — saying they “need to stop telling us that 51 million people didn’t see what we just saw” at the June 27 CNN debate. “We are not going to win in November with this president,” Clooney wrote. “This isn’t only my opinion; this is the opinion of every senator and Congress member and governor that I’ve spoken with in private. Every single one, irrespective of what he or she is saying publicly.”
Ultimately, Clooney concluded that “the dam has broken” and Democrats must submit to a “messy” replacement process in order to “save democracy.”
Change of Tune
As you may recall, the main headline to come out of Clooney’s fundraiser for Biden was not the historic amount of money raised but rather the president’s concerning behavior inside the event. Video showed the commander in chief freezing up during an interview with Barack Obama and late-night host Jimmy Kimmel and needing to be escorted off stage by the former president.
In the lead up to the disastrous debate, these were among the videos being branded as “cheap fakes” by the White House and many on the left. And if there was any question remaining about the validity of the clips, Clooney took it upon himself to clear up the confusion by writing that the Biden at his fundraiser was the same Biden the American people watched at the debate.
That about face was not lost on Greenwald. “I just have to begin with expressing disgust and indignation because he referenced the disoriented, confused, lost Joe Biden at that fundraising event that he co-hosted… [and] if you look at these videos, Biden seems totally disoriented and lost,” he noted. “And not just the White House but the entire press corp came down and said people who are saying this are right-wing liars, they’re disinformation peddlers, and they’re snipping manipulative, deceitful portions of video Biden.”
Oh, how times have changed. “Now suddenly because it’s permissible to say it… all these Democrats are willing to admit it was actually happening all along,” Greenwald added. “The idea that the media is pretending like, ‘We were misled by the White House into believing that Joe Biden was vigorous and mentally adept’… sickens me to my core. It is such a lie.”
Megyn agreed. “I bet it was long before three weeks ago that Clooney and others knew how bad [Biden] was, but it wasn’t until they could no longer hide it that they started to admit the truth to the rest of us,” she said. “To me, that’s the story.”
