The news of the day is the stunning announcement that came via a post on X yesterday. Joe Biden shared a letter that stated he would be dropping out of the 2024 presidential race.
But the very real question is: Where the hell is the president?
What We Know
At 1:46pm ET on Sunday, Joe Biden unceremoniously ended his reelection bid with a one-page statement posted by whoever runs his X account. As of now, we still have not seen or heard from him publicly.
The news was reportedly kept so close to the vest that even top advisers and members of his cabinet found out via social media. Stunned White House staffers are reported to have broken down in tears at the news. After all, they had defiantly told the world for weeks that President Biden was not dropping out of the race.
According to in-depth reporting from Politico and The New York Times, here is how it all went down: On Saturday, Biden summoned close advisers Steve Ricchetti and Mike Donilon to his Delaware beach house where they supposedly ‘socially distanced’ from the president to craft his exit strategy.
Remember, the White House told us last Wednesday that Mr. Biden had tested positive for COVID. That same night, video showed him appearing to need physical assistance from the Secret Service to even get into his waiting motorcade. The footage was alarming. Since then, we haven’t seen him.
Then, just one minute before the news broke of his withdrawal, President Biden reportedly told other advisers, including Anita Dunn, who manages communications strategy.
The Letter
Next, came the post on X and the letter that leaves many questions.
First, it doesn’t include the official White House seal. The letterhead simply says “Joseph R. Biden, Jr.” Why is that?
The letter itself reads, in part:
“I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
There is no explanation for his decision, and there is no endorsement of his vice president.
Curiously, many are also questioning if the signature on the letter even belongs to the president. Did he actually sign this letter?
As you can see in the zoomed-in picture above, there is an underline under his name. That is something he apparently never does. Additionally, it appears the name Biden has an ‘s’ at the end. Does it say ‘The Bidens’? Maybe the ‘s’ is meant to connote it is from both Joe and Jill?
I did go back to look at other signatures from him (a few examples above) just to see if that is the way his ‘n’ always looks. But no, that is not usually the case. I don’t know what the ‘s’ is doing there. It is unlike anything we have seen from him.
More Questions Than Answers
I have a lot of questions about this, and I do think we deserve answers. Why have we not seen Joe Biden? Why isn’t the letter on White House stationery? Why does it have an ‘s’ at the end of the signature? Why is there an underline when there never is? What is happening?
There are also some concerning statements from his younger brother Jim Biden about how, on a selfish basis, he is looking forward to spending whatever time the president has left with him. What does that mean? Joe Biden is still our sitting president. He didn’t resign the presidency; he is just not running for a second term.
So many questions are still unanswered and yet the White House called a lid for today. He has not appeared publicly in videos or photographs since announcing at 1pm yesterday, and now we will not be seeing him today either. What is happening? Is Joe Biden okay?
