Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff took the stage on night two of the Democratic National Convention. His speech was largely overshadowed by all the fanfare surrounding Barack and Michelle Obama, but he was there to speak more personally about Kamala Harris.
I will admit, he came across as a sweet guy with his affect. He clearly loves Kamala, and that’s nice. But all I could think about while I was watching him was the affair story.
The Democrats tweeted out from their X account a picture of Doug and Kamala from years ago saying something to the effect of “who could have predicted he was going to marry a future president?”
Certainly not his first wife on whom he cheated with the nanny, creating a love child who was either aborted or is fatherless at the moment. Like, why would you post that tweet? If I had been running the event, I probably wouldn’t have used him. I would have found someone else who could tell nice stories about Kamala Harris because even the ones he did share fell flat.
Case in point: This story he told about the vice president and his daughter Ella.
EMHOFF: A few days ago, during this incredible time we’re going through, there was a brief window when Kamala was back at home. And I saw her sitting on her favorite chair, and in the middle of a wild month, I just hoped that she was having a quiet moment to herself. But then I realized she was on the phone. And, of course, my mind went to all the potential crises that the vice president could be dealing with. Was it domestic? Was it foreign? Was it campaign? I could see she was focused, and all I knew was that it must be something important. And it turns out it was. Ella had called her. That’s Kamala. That’s Kamala.
I’m sorry, what? She took a phone call from her stepdaughter? Call Nobel and get her on the shortlist.
Here’s why it didn’t work for me: If it had been something like Ella just had this massive disappointment and reached out to Kamala in the middle of her taking the phone call from Barack Obama saying she was now the nominee and she said, ‘Mr. President, I can’t speak to you now. Ella is here and she needs me.’ Okay, now I’m with you.
But this was simply: ‘She spoke on the phone with Ella.’ I was waiting for a bigger conclusion, and it just didn’t land bigly.
