As you heard me say on the show last night and again today, there is a lot about the ABC News presidential debate that made me angry. And the cherry on top of the sundae is that CNN fact-checkers determined Donald Trump “delivered more than 30 false claims” on Tuesday night compared to “just one” from Kamala Harris.
I mean, we have to laugh, but the state of the media is dire. I don’t know what the future looks like, but I do know it is end times – and for very good reason. Yet for as obsolete as the corporate press has become amid the rise of independent media, I still think they play an important role in the national discourse and must be held accountable.
ABC News hosted what will probably be the only presidential debate of this election cycle, and they were so biased. They are influencing a presidential election. It almost feels like cheating to me.
I understand why we have gotten away from the Commission on Presidential Debates. Those debates were not perfect. We have gone over Chris Wallace’s bias in 2020 and, of course, Candy Crowley with Mitt Romney in 2012. There were plenty of fall downs, but this new system is not working. These debates are too important to allow a network with an agenda like ABC News to have sole control over the sole debate.
In retrospect, I realize we could say Trump shouldn’t have agreed to it. But I also realize why he agreed to it. He thought it was signing up for a pair of debates against Joe Biden, and he wanted to say, ‘Okay, I’m putting myself out there.’
Even last night, Trump went into the spin room after the debate. Did Kamala Harris? No, she is still hiding from the media. We don’t get to interview her. We have no access to her. She doesn’t hold press conferences. She gave one interview to a fawning Dana Bash who fell down in the job. And now, in this one presidential debate, the media tanked it for her.
This is really serious. While the corporate media is failing – and it is falling – these organizations still control a lot of forums that matter. It is very disheartening to watch how low they have gone. I just can’t believe that, back in the day, the Roone Arledges of the world would have allowed something like this. And yet, there it is.
