Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour kicks off its final leg in Miami, Florida, on Friday night, and the pop star teased her return to the stage with a short video on Instagram. It was only her second post on the platform since she formally endorsed Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, and it seemed to have a political message of its own.
On Friday’s show, Megyn reacted to Swift’s latest political statement and why parents in particular should pay attention to it.
Childless Cat Lady Returns
Just minutes after the ABC News presidential debate last month, Swift put an end to the speculation and announced her endorsement the Harris-Walz ticket with a post on Instagram. The Grammy winner wrote that she is supporting the vice president because she is “a steady-handed, gifted leader” and “fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them.”
Another factor? Harris’ selection of Walz as her running mate. “I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades,” the pop star added.
She signed the post “Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady” in a reference to GOP vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance’s controversial comments, and she used a photo of herself with one of her feline companions as the hero image much to the delight of the left. She seemingly picked right back up on that theme in her latest video.
In the clip, Swift is walking around the floor of Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens while holding her cat Olivia Benson. Set to GloRilla and Sexyy Red’s song “Whatchu Kno About Me,” she captioned the post “Back in the office… 😎” with the hashtag “MiamiTSTheErasTour.”
‘She Doesn’t Care’
Megyn said Swift’s internetions were clear. “She is just reminding us she is a childless cat lady,” she noted. “But I’m not sure it has the message that you think it does because you are 34, your love life and your travails are in the news every other week, you sing all the time about being rejected and cheated on and scarred… Like, it’s a little more complicated than you are leading us to believe.”
In Megyn’s view, Swift has “one issue, which is abortion, and that is what she is in favor of.” But she is not in tune with what most voters are facing. “Like Taylor Swift can relate at all to the problems the working class or the middle class, who are really considering Trump even if they don’t much like the man,” Megyn questioned. “It makes no sense.”
While Swift did lose some followers on various platforms in the aftermath of her endorsement, Megyn said it is but a drop in the bucket for the star. “I think she lost a few million subscribers on Spotify… but that is like Kim Kardashian losing a million followers on Instagram,” she said. “She wouldn’t even feel it. So she doesn’t care, and that’s fine.”
That is why, Megyn said, parents need pay attention. “I think the consumer should just be aware of that when they give their daughters over to this woman and remember to counter-program for your daughter,” she concluded. “Taylor Swift may sing some songs your daughter likes, but that does not make her any sort of moral arbiter in how they should live their life, or choose their partners, or approach relationships, or anything.”
