It was but three weeks ago that Dave Portnoy took to social media to issue a six-minute rebuke of the left for, in his words, “gaslighting” the American people on the quality of Kamala Harris as a candidate. He deemed her “the worst candidate to ever run for president.”
Now that Harris has lost the 2024 election in decisive fashion, Portnoy dropped another video in which he ripped into Democrats for running the “worst campaign” and failing to understand what voters actually care about.
On Friday’s show, Megyn was joined by Batya Ungar-Sargon, author of Second Class, to discuss Portnoy’s critique and what it says about the state of the Democrat Party.
Portnoy’s Rant
Just hours after Trump was named the winner of the 2024 election, the Barstool Sports founder posted a three-minute video across his social media channels with his reaction, and he did not mince words when declaring the Democratic Party’s “arrogance” and “moral superiority” are what led to Trump’s landslide victory and Republicans taking control of the U.S. Senate.
“He just didn’t win. He won for fun: he won the electoral, he won the popular vote, he got more votes than last time,” Portnoy said. “Just a total ringing endorsement for the Republicans and Donald Trump and an indictment against the Democrats.”
Portnoy, who is not a Republican or even right-of-center, said Dems did not offer a compelling reason to vote blue. “The Democrats gave us no choice,” he explained. “If you say you’re voting for Trump, suddenly you’re a Nazi, you’re Hitler, you’re garbage. Enough. Enough!”
Additionally, he said they turned off “all the middle ground people by acting like you’re better than us, smarter than us.” That is what led him to pull the lever for Trump. “I felt I had no choice but to vote for him because of the campaign that the Democrats ran,” Portnoy added.
He said the left has “lost the plot” and offered this message: “You’re alienating half of the country – more of it,” he concluded. “Tonight is on the Democrats.”
Trump Takes Over
Portnoy told Democrats they need to “wake up” and “move on,” but Megyn wondered if they are capable of doing so. In Ungar-Sagon’s view, it will not be possible until the left reconnects with the parts of America they left behind.
“Stephen Colbert actually uttered the words ‘today is the day the American people voted against democracy,'” she noted. “He literally cannot tell that he is describing democracy when saying what he really means is ‘they voted against my interests as a millionaire.’ That is what they really mean.”
While Democrats were busy comparing Trump to Adolf Hitler and Nazis, as Portnoy pointed out, the president-elect was busy making his case to voters. Ungar-Sagon said she believes “the majority of Hispanic men broke for Trump” because he “lifted the Democrats’ pro-labor agenda right out from under their noses.”
Once upon a time, she said the Democrats were the ones who supported “labor” and “the working class.” They “used to believe in a strong border and trade deals that favored American workers,” they were “socially moderate,” and they also “believed in being anti-war.”
“Who does that sound like today,” Ungar-Sargon asked. “That is not the Democrats’ position today. That is Donald Trump’s agenda. And that is why the reason Donald Trump won is the same reason that Kamala Harris lost.”
