The Assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO: What We Know About the Suspect, Motive, and More

UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot dead on a New York City sidewalk around 6:45am last Wednesday in a shocking execution. The assassin escaped the scene on an e-bike and remained at large for five days.

On Monday morning, 26-year-old Maryland native Luigi Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after patrons and an employee recognized him from the photos circulated by law enforcement.

According to the police, Mangione started shaking when asked if he had ever been to New York City and didn’t answer the question directly. He was taken into custody without incident after reportedly using the same fake New Jersey ID that he used to check into a hostel on the Upper West Side before the killing.

The Ivy League graduate’s attorney indicated his client will fight extradition to New York City, where he faces a murder charge, during a chaotic hearing on Tuesday at which he was denied bail. And as the legal process unfolds, Thompson’s assassination has been met with glee by some on the left.
