The so-called ‘tech titans’ descended on Washington, D.C., on Monday for Donald Trump’s inauguration. Elon Musk has been a fixture of the Trump team since before the election, but he was joined in the Capitol Building by Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, Apple’s Tim Cook, Google’s Sundar Pichai, and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos to name a few.
Bezos did not make the trip alone. He was alongside his fiancée, Lauren Sánchez, who made headlines of her own due to her rather revealing wardrobe choice that stood in stark contrast to the demure looks sported by the Trumps and Usha Vance.
On Monday’s show, Megyn was joined by Emily Jashinsky, D.C. correspondent for Unherd, and Eliana Johnson, editor-in-chief of The Washington Free Beacon, to discuss Sánchez’s outfit and the vibe shift in the fashion world.
The Controversy
Sánchez is not known for her modesty, and her Inauguration Day outfit sparked backlash from those who believed it was too risqué for the setting. “She dresses like a prostitute, and she looked like a hooker at the inauguration,” Megyn said. “She wore a corset and she had her boobs on display. I can’t with this woman.”
The 55 year old stood out in a white Alexander McQueen pantsuit that paired a wide-leg trouser with a more fitted blazer. But it was her plunging, bustier-inspired top that caught the attention of onlookers – including, it seemed, her seatmate Zuckerberg. “All over X was a picture of Mark Zuckerberg [looking at her], and I don’t blame him,” Megyn added. “This is absurd. She could not even keep them covered up for a day.”
Megyn said she took just as much issue with Sen. John Fetterman’s (D-PA) decision to wear his trademark shorts to the festivities, but she was willing to bet Sánchez would get the lion’s share of attention. “Have some dignity and some respect for your setting,” Megyn said. “No one should be talking about your tits. They should be talking about the inauguration.”
Vibe Shift
But there were plenty of fashion triumphs on display as well. Melania Trump stunned in a tailored navy coat, pencil skirt, and ivory blouse all designed by Adam Lippes. She accessorized with navy stilettos, black leather gloves, and a navy wide-brimmed hat by Eric Javits.
Vance was radiant in a custom Oscar de la Renta peony coat and scarf, which she paired with a complementing tea-length dress. She also wore a black gown by the fashion house to a pre-inaugural ball on Sunday.
Oscar de la Renta created two looks for First Daughter Ivanka Trump as well, and the brand proudly posted about all of it on social media. As Jashinsky noted, the transparency was a marked change from the first Trump term.
“Oscar de la Renta was sort of openly posting on social media about how they dressed Usha and Ivanka, and, if I’m remembering correctly, it was only like Dolce & Gabbana that would dress Melania during the first term,” she said. “I’m so fascinated that these brands actually want to be associated… They’re going out there and posting it to their own marketing platforms. That’s a vibe shift if I’ve ever seen one.”
While the fashion magazine features will likely never come for these women, Megyn said a change is underway in D.C. “It’s a delight to see somebody who is incredibly stylish and sophisticated and classy resume this role,” she said of the first lady. “I am sick of the Vogues of the world trying to make… Jill Biden… a fashion icon. Melania Trump, an actual supermodel… [was] never on the cover of Vogue, but she is the epitome of class.”
