We have to talk about last night’s Grammy Awards. Of course, you didn’t watch them. Neither did I. Nobody watched them. We only see the clips online, but watching them does give you a little window into how insane these so-called ‘cultural leaders’ of the music industry are.
It used to be kind of cool to be a musician; to be somebody who could fill a stadium around the world with people jumping up and down and loving them. Now, you have absolute idiots trying to espouse their political views to us as though we care about anything about them other than the way they sing songs.
Political Theater
Take, for instance, Alicia Keys. Miss Oh-I-swear-I-wasn’t-coincidentally-wearing-Hamas-colors-and-posting-about-paragliding-days-after-October-7 was there to accept the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award. This is how she chose to use her acceptance speech:
KEYS: …This is not the time to shut down the diversity of voices. We’ve seen on this stage, talented, hard working people from different backgrounds, with different points of view, and it changes the game. DEI is not a threat, it’s a gift. And the more voices, the more powerful the sound. When destructive forces try to burn us down, we rise from the ashes like a phoenix…
“When destructive forces try to burn us down”? I believe that was yet another reference to Israel. By the way, it was Hamas who did the burning of actual people and babies, Alicia. You might want to do a little research before you go out there and wag your finger because you don’t know what the eff you are talking about.
But she wasn’t the only one. Shakira pulled a Selena Gomez when she won the award for Best Latin Pop Album. “I want to dedicate this award to all my immigrant brothers and sisters in this country,” she began. “You are loved. You are worth it. And I will always fight with you.”
You had Lady Gaga making her acceptance speech for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance all about trans people. “Trans people are not invisible. Trans people deserve love. The queer community deserves to be lifted up,” she said as the audience rose to its feet. “Music is love.”
These people are very annoying, and you really should pause before you think about giving them your money.
Beyoncé’s Big Night
Kanye West’s wife, Bianca Censori, stole the red carpet with her completely naked appearance (you can read my thoughts on that here), but Beyoncé was the big winner. She had the most nominations heading into the night with 11 for her album Cowboy Carter. That gave her 99 noms and 32 wins, the most of any artist in history. She added to the win total on Sunday with three more gramophones, including for Best Country Album and Album of the Year.
On X, Mike Harlow put the figures in context. “Frank Sinatra has 11 Grammys. The Beatles have [seven] Grammys. Judy Garland had [two] Grammys. The Rolling Stones have [three] Grammys. Beyoncé has [35],” he posted with the eye roll emoji. “Most overrated artist of all time!”
I totally agree with that. And by the way, you don’t have to take my word for it or Mike Harlow’s word for it. This is what country music star John Rich tweeted:
“Folks are asking me ‘how do music award shows work?’ Labels/publishers all have blocks of votes. They make deals with each other ‘you vote for mine, we’ll vote for yours’ type thing,” Rich wrote on X. “It has ZERO to do with who made the best music, thus, Beyonce with ‘Country album of the year.’ Nice, right? The same thing is true with the CMA’s, ACM’s, Billboard, etc…all work exactly the same. Last night, the Grammy’s outed themselves in a big way.”
It is ridiculous. Her husband Jay-Z, I’m sure, pays for all these aggressive marketing campaigns, and we are supposed to pretend that Queen Bey is unassailable in her country music attempts. Well, you know what? She isn’t. We are not buying it. We know what happened and how she got her 35 Grammys when you’ve got two for the Judy Garlands of the world.
Then and Now
It is obvious what the industry is doing. It is just not the same as it used to be. There was a time when true merit determined who won these awards. That time has come and gone, and America knows it. They know whether it is an Oscar campaign or a Grammys campaign.
These stars are making fools of themselves in trying to offer political commentary when no one believes they have any working knowledge of the issues. And for what it’s worth, I am convinced of that Alicia Keys reference. We know what you’re doing. We realize you thought what Hamas did was aces. You made that clear. You are disgusting.
