After getting the cold shoulder from fans at an NBA game between Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors earlier this month, Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff were showered with affection by theatergoers in New York City over the weekend.
The former vice president saw two shows on Broadway while in town and was reportedly cheered by the crowds. After one of the performances, the failed presidential candidate held court with the cast and crew and delivered an “inspirational” message in a way only she can.
On Tuesday’s show, Megyn was joined by Matt Taibbi and Walter Kirn, hosts of America This Week, to discuss Harris’ latest word salad and took on the internet theory that she was actually inebriated.
Broadway Bound
Harris and Emhoff were spotted taking in two Broadway productions over the weekend, A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical and Gypsy. After the performance of the jukebox musical about the jazz legend, the former second couple gathered with the cast and crew on stage for a meet and greet.
Harris also used the opportunity to share some words of wisdom. Actor Wesley J. Barnes shared a video of Harris on Instagram, thanking her for taking the time to “inspire” and “speak life into” the group. But not everyone had the same takeaway. Watch:
“When we think about these moments where we see things that are being taken, but also let’s see it, you know, nature abhors a vacuum so where’s, so where there’s a vacancy, let’s fill it, right,” she said. “And let’s know that the, the reality is that the progress of our nation has always been about the expansion of rights, not the restriction of rights. We’re seeing a U-turn right now, but we have to keep fighting for those rights to be maintained, which means we have to be vigilant and it’s just the nature of it.”
“We have to be clear eyed, and it doesn’t mean we don’t see the beauty in everything, right,” she continued. “These things all coexist, but I believe we fight for something, not against it, right? Right? And that’s our optimism, right?”
Par for the Course?
The internet determined her slurring and halting delivery called to mind the bizarre pre-recorded video Harris’ team released after her election loss that had her leaning into her “wine aunt” status, but Megyn wasn’t so sure. “I’m going to give you my verdict: Not drunk, just her normal self,” she said. “That is how she is… She fills the air with absolute nothingness. You feel like you ate a big air sandwich, and then she walks away.”
Delivery aside, Kirn agreed that the content – or lack thereof – was classic Kamala. “She is the queen of pseudo profundity. If she hears the word yes, she said, ‘We say yes to this, but no to that.’ ‘If we’re for this, we’re against that,'” he explained. “She is always trying to make some sort of oratorical, Ciceronian point out of absolutely nothing.”
Taibbi has been covering Harris for years now and said some things never change. “Having covered her in Iowa and on the campaign trail in 2020, I know a lot of journalists kind of struggled with how to comment on scenes like that,” he noted. “She was essentially spinning these giant sandcastles of nothingness, but it is impossible to convey the exact impression that she is giving while she goes off in these rants.”
Megyn’s tip? “You have to watch it to believe it,” she concluded.
