Joy Reid’s final show on MSNBC aired Monday night. The ReidOut was cancelled along with the programs of Alex Wagner, Ayman Mohyeldin, Katie Phang, and Jonathan Capehart.
Never one to not be the center of attention if she can find a way of injecting herself into a story, Reid’s now former colleague Rachel Maddow decided to deliver a monologue aimed directly at her bosses.
There was a theme to what we saw, and I looked it up in the dictionary just so I would know the actual definition. Merriam Webster defines ‘sanctimony’ as affected or hypocritical holiness. Wikipedia describes it as a feeling or display of moral superiority. I will give you one more. According to Oxford, ‘self righteous’ means a certainty, especially an unfounded one, that one is totally correct or morally superior.
Maddow’s Monologue
And with that, I give you Rachel Maddow Monday night:
MADDOW: In all of the jobs I have had, in all of the years I have been alive, there is no colleague for whom I have had more affection and more respect than Joy Reid. I love everything about her. I have learned so much from her. I have so much more to learn from her. I do not want to lose her as a colleague here at MSNBC and, personally, I think it is a bad mistake to let her walk out the door. It is not my call, and I understand that. I will tell you, it is also unnerving to see that on a network where we’ve got two – count ’em two – non-white hosts in primetime, both of our non-white hosts in primetime are losing their shows, as is Katie Phang on the weekend. And that feels worse than bad, no matter who replaces them. That feels indefensible, and I do not defend it…
She really is one of the most annoying people on television. She oozes sanctimony and self righteousness. And here is the real capper: She took her bosses’ faces and rubbed them in sh-t last night. That is what she did.
She has two bosses. The first is Rachel Kutler, the new president of MSNBC who took over from Rashida Jones in February. Kulter, in turn, answers to Mark Lazarus. His current title is prospective chief executive officer of SpinCo, which refers to Comcast’s plan to spin off MSNBC. He is responsible for the company’s networks.
Rebecca and Mark, do you have any spines whatsoever? Are you actually going to let an employee – that is what Rachel Maddow is – talk about you, your company, and your decision making this way? Mr. Lazarus, do you have any testicular fortitude to stand up for yourself as a professional and executive, never mind a man, and tell this woman she is fired for insubordination and for disparaging the network publicly in front of our four viewers?
It is one thing if you are in the middle of a whistleblower scandal. I actually thought it was to Rachel Maddow’s credit when she called NBC out for lying about not having the Harvey Weinstein story. That was one thing, but just getting on to randomly disagree with your bosses’ decisions and accuse them of racism because you would have come to a different conclusion is something else entirely.
She is not breaking news here. She is just offering her opinion. That is what a door is for. You knock on it and you talk to your bosses directly if you disagree with the decision that they have made. This is not the Pentagon Papers. This is not calling them out on their lies about Harvey Weinstein. This is, ‘I disagree with your decision, and I think you are a racist.’
Well, if you really think that, then you should not be working there. Why don’t you take your $25 million salary and walk? Put your money where your mouth is. If you are really so disgusted with the ‘racism’ over at MSNBC, why do you want to work there?
Misplaced Outrage
She is so upset about the fact that there are layoffs, but do you know why there are layoffs and Joy Reid finally lost her job? It is because of you, Rachel Maddow, and your colleagues who completely destroyed the credibility of the entire network.
You did that more than anyone did that. Yes, Joy Reid is a racist race-baiter who hates the country, but you are the biggest conspiracy theorist on television. You are the one who pushed ‘Russia, Russia, Russia’ for years, trying to make it sound like you had special insights you could let us in on to drive up your numbers. And the reason we know it was made up and not a good faith error is because you never apologized or corrected the record.
Your network is imploding because you have lost credibility even among your far-left viewers. They know you and your colleagues are bullsh-t. They know you have been misleading them, serially, for years now.
I am glad you feel sad that some staffers are getting laid off. But if you’re looking for someone to blame, look in the mirror, sister. It is not the fault of the new woman, Rebecca, who took over two minutes ago. It is your fault, and Joy Reid’s fault, and Lawrence O’Donnell’s fault, and Chris Hayes’ fault.
Et Tu?
If we are going to play by her rules and she feels so bad about the number of whites in the primetime lineup, you know what she can do? She can ride right off set and go home to one of her mansions.
If you care so much, Rachel, leave your post and open it up for a person of color. And while you are at it, why don’t you pay some of the salaries MSNBC can no longer afford because of your enormous salary, which is totally outsized relative to the numbers and results you produce?
Spare me your sanctimony and self righteousness when you are not willing to actually do anything about the situation other than virtue signal and try to act like a better person than the lowly ‘racists’ who surround you. It is a joke, and it is offensive.
Rachel Maddow will never do it because she needs her power, she needs to feel important, and she needs her $25 million a year.
